How Deep Should You Dig for Interlock Driveways and Patios?

Why Excavation Depth Matters for Interlocking Pavers
Whether you’re installing an interlock driveway or a backyard patio, the foundation is everything. The depth you dig—and how well you prepare the base—can determine whether your pavers stay smooth and level for years, or start to shift and settle prematurely.
At Alcozi Landscaping, we take pride in doing things right the first time. That starts with understanding the proper excavation depth based on the type of project, soil conditions, and how the space will be used.
Recommended Digging Depths for Interlock Installations
Here are our standard excavation guidelines for residential interlock projects:
Interlock Driveways
- Excavation Depth: 12 to 16 inches (30 to 40 cm)
- Installation Breakdown:
- 8 to 10 inches of compacted gravel or limestone base
- 1 inch of bedding sand
- 2.5 to 3.5 inches of interlocking pavers
- 8 to 10 inches of compacted gravel or limestone base
- Why It Matters: Driveways need to support the weight of vehicles. A thick, compacted base ensures structural integrity and reduces the risk of shifting or sinking over time.
Backyard Patios and Walkways
- Excavation Depth: 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 cm)
- Installation Breakdown:
- 4 to 6 inches of compacted granular base
- 1 inch of screeded sand
- 2 to 3 inches of pavers
- 4 to 6 inches of compacted granular base
- Why It Matters: Patios and walkways experience less load than driveways but still need a stable base to prevent uneven surfaces and drainage issues.
What Can Affect the Required Digging Depth?
At Alcozi Landscaping, we tailor every project based on a few key site-specific factors:
Soil Type
- Clay soils retain moisture and require deeper excavation for better drainage.
- Sandy soils drain quickly but may need more compaction for stability.
Frost Line (Cold Climates)
In colder regions, digging below the frost line prevents frost heaving—where freezing ground pushes pavers up and out of place. A properly installed base with the right depth helps protect your investment all year round.
Drainage Requirements
Improper drainage can lead to water pooling and base erosion. We design custom drainage solutions based on the slope and soil type to keep your interlock surface dry and stable.
Load-Bearing Needs
Driveways and patios that support heavy loads—like trucks, hot tubs, or outdoor kitchens—need a thicker base to ensure long-term performance.
